I never liked Emily as much as Anne - too melancholy for my liking - but I have to acknowledge this book would speak to an introspective girl and gives you insight into L.M. Montgomery because this series is her most autobiographical. There is the love of PE Island and the orphans finding friends, and a touch of Wuthering Heights like melodrama if you like that sort of thing. This is the best of the Emily books and well done, just not for me.
I kind of enjoyed this story but would have loved it a lot more if Emily was not writing to her dead grandfather so much. I got the whole trilogy and decided to skip the other 2 books because I was sick of that storyline (yes, it happens throughout the whole series). I'm hoping my niece doesn't feel the same way I did because I will be gifting her the 3 books when she's old enough to read them.
Would probably be a higher star rating if I could tolerate reading about Dean Priest for even a paragraph
It's cute, but I just don't think I am ever going to finish it. It has such a slow, measured, relaxed pace, and that is just not what I have been in the mood for lately. Maybe someday I will finish it!

There were some really wonderful parts of this book. As always, I love the description of natural environments, family relationships, and culture. There's a very entertaining bit with a Catholic priest that I quite enjoyed.
But about 2/3rds of the way through there is a heavy implication of a 36 year old man being enamored with a 12 year old girl. The narrative is such that we presume he will court her once she is fully grown but it is still unnerving and gross to a modern reader. Unfortunately I don't think this one will be revisited for me, though I generally love LMM's work.
