An intriguing story for sure. While the identity of the killer is mostly a mystery for the detective, not us, there are plenty of questions we as a reader still want answers for. I must say some of the dialogue was silly, others outright made no sense whatsoever, but The Bride Wore Black was still a highly entertaining noir read.

Decent--at the time I would have given it 4 stars, I bet, but one has slipped away over time as I no longer very much remember it, whereas other boks that I may have underestimated have stayed with me, and gained an extra star at it's expense, so-to-speak. (There are still Agatha Christie and Sayers novels that I read 45 years ago and recall with love and a suprising amount of detail!)

This is noirish fiction--I'd just seen the Jessica Lange film version of The Postman Always Rings Twice, read the Cain novel, and was exploring similar works.

(Note: 5 stars = amazing, wonderful, 4 = very good book, 3 = decent read, 2 = disappointing, 1 = awful, just awful. I'm fairly good at picking for myself so end up with a lot of 4s). I feel a lot of readers automatically render any book they enjoy 5, but I grade on a curve!

A pretty thrilling read that I finished in a day! I liked all of the ways our murderer disguised herself, especially when she was Ms. Baker for the evening, playing hide-n-seek and locking a man in a closet so that he suffocated to death. It's a short book and the deaths come just as quickly; but you do get 3 out of 4 of these deaths spoiled by the blurb?? Next time, I'll just check out whichever book I want and just trust the process of reading it.

Fun! Sort of silly...there are moments when it shows its age, and you need to suspend your disbelief a fair amount for the final section, but I'm fine with that!
