I adored this book. The writing is lovely and the story of the lifelong friendship between two married couples is lifelike and wonderful. The time frame, the setting (mostly Vermont and Wisconsin) and the philosophical and moral issues faced by the characters all come together in a perfect way. Highly recommended.

I thought that this was really compelling, more for the characters and world that the author creates than the story. At first it seems a little pretentious, because it's about two kind of elitist writing professors and their wives, but in the end I thought that it had very beautiful prose and an interesting structure, where most of the book is spent describing this short period of time when they first become friends.

This book was beautiful. I loved it! Stegner writes so thoughtfully and the feelings his writings evoke remind me a little of Robert Frost.

This is a plain, ordinary book in which nothing really happens. But the writing is eloquent and intriguing.

I found this one hard to get into, especially because I hated the characters. I stuck with it, however, because the story of a long-lasting friendship and the way life does and doesn't work out is one you want to finish. I feel motivated to read more Wallace Stegner, weirdly, because I really didn't like his prose style yet he's thought to be a master.

So very boring.
