Reading this was a cozy, deeply reflective experience. I will be picking up more books by Stegner!
This was a great read. The author has a deft way of making the mundane fascinating. That made the journey to Italy a bit jarring to me, but that's a minor quibble. A highly enjoyable read.
Too much like a classic American film made of its illusory whims of goodness and happiness. Excessively pedantic.

“I didn’t know myself well, and still don’t. But I did know, and know now, the few people I loved and trusted. My feeling for them is one part of me I have never quarreled with, even though my relations with them have more than once been abrasive.”
I really liked this, but I was lost by the literary and cultural references that I was not familiar with. The writing is really lovely and I will definitely read more of his work.

Nice read but being an adult sounds so boring
It took me a while to get into this book. At first, it came off as a little outdated and stale, but I soon came to appreciate the timelessness of Stegner's reflections on this partly-fictionalized life. His way of stitching together vignettes is altogether masterful and by the time I reached the final portion of the book, I realized how well I knew the personalities of the main characters. The ending was operatic and much more dramatic than the scenes leading up to it, which I can appreciate the literary flair of. The use of foreshadowing was so skillful that I didn't even know it was happening until the thing, whether it be an idea or a place, returned.
I loved this book. The characters were so well developed and the writing was gorgeous. I was brought to tears at times. Even though the ending was left open, I still felt like I had closure as the book neared its end. I read Angle of Repose and didn't like it so was hesitant to read this one...but so glad I did!
