Let me preface by saying I’ve read this series many times over, but it’s been a few years since I’ve picked them up.

I remember them being good- but I forgot how much I really liked them!

Cassandra Clare’s writing style is so inviting and enticing- it was hard for me to set the book down.

If you haven’t read them, I highly recommend it.

4.5 stars out of 5.

It wasn't as bad as some reviews make it out to be. Yea there were moments when I thought this is just like (insert book here) but it seems like a lot of reviewers are trying to find similarities and point them out. There are far too many books in this genre, especially the young adult ones that you can do that with and it would lead you to not enjoy the story.
It was an okay book. Decent story, typical characters, nice world build, a lot of action. Not a great plot twist in the story just because of how it was done in my opinion. I still liked it enough I will read more of this series and probably check out the movie when it comes out. I can definitely see the movie potential.

Clare's introduction to the world of Nephilim was a sturdy one. I read her prequel, The Infernal Devices, prior to The Mortal Instruments series, and I recognized a lot of similarities between the two (other than, you know, the whole Shadowhunter world thingy). Clare likes bold feminine leads and badass boys on the side. Otherwise, I was pleased in the way she diversified her characters' personalities between the two series. She describes incredibly well, though sometimes she overuses vocabulary (how many times can you say gild on one page again?). The mood of the book is very alike the mood of Infernal, even in the case that each is set in a different time period. I must say, I thought the book was predictable, but perhaps that is because I watch too many soap operas. Can't wait to read more!

The Mortal Instruments was my first foray into the world of romantasy. I read City of Bones for the first time back in middle school, maybe high school. I had found pdf copies of the book online (as so many did back then) and flew through the entire series.

Now, in the year 2023, would I ever recommend the series to someone else? No, probably not. Although I re-read them with an air of nostalgia, someone who has never read them before maybe shouldn’t get into them. So much has come out about both the story itself and the author in the past 10ish years. It has caused me to view the series in a new light, and not a good one.

The story itself is interesting enough and I think she does a good job at building her characters. However, she does have a lot to go off of, if you know the inspiration behind this series. As well, there’s a certain storyline that pops up at the end of this book that continues into the next book that I wish wouldn’t have been included at all. It’s uncomfortable to read, although clearly the author is into that. I definitely think this book (and the rest of the series) would rate much higher for me if it wasn’t for that storyline.
