What is the responsibility of creator over creation? What do we owe to one another? What does loneliness do to a person? What are we willing to accept as the sacrifices of Great CisHet White Men for Greatness?

Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, you were a teenage goth queen genius. I both hate and love that this is still as strikingly and life-changingly beautiful and relevant 200 years later as it is.

This is an absolutely kaleidoscopic text. There are readings of every field of cultural literary theory I love in these pages in ways that feel impossible to have come from a moment so far away from me in the past.

White supremacy, hyperindustrialization, masculine isolation, anti-queerness, ableism — a smorgasbord of sociopolitical commentary that has aged like the absolute finest of wines.

Wow. Wow, wow, wow.

A classic written in 1818 by an 18 year old woman, consider by many the first science fiction work, amazing!

Read it in high school, picked up for a Halloween re-read. Classic for a reason but not as spooky as one would expect

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
Victor Frankenstein is obsessed with creating life. When he ends up completing his goal creating a monstrous life, his monster is set upon the world.

How was this written over 200 years ago?! A gothic horror classic! It has so many themes inside this text! The way it delves into isolation, ambition, and what it means to be alive. The scientist is on that thin line between genius and madness. The way Frankenstein’s monster just feels so much loneliness throughout the story made me so sad.

He just wanted real connection but is full of guilt, rejection, and abandonment. It really puts into perspective who the real monster is. Victor or his monster?

Definitely a classic and I am so glad I was able to read it finally. Cannot imagine why I waited so long. I can see how this has inspired so many other works!
