I liked it, though I enjoyed Danger in the Shadows more. I just felt like I was reading the same story again. Guy meets girl in danger. Guy vows to protect girl. Guy and girl fall in love. They resolve the danger and live happily ever after. The main characters feel similar as well. The plotline may have been very different, but the two main female characters from both books are very much alike. And the main male character in this one was one of the MC's from the previous.

I did like it and I read it in about two sittings on the same day so it was hardly a dull read. I just didn't enjoy it quite as much as the prequel.

I really enjoyed the mystery of the plane crash and the way it was solved, however I did not like the romance in the book. They did not kiss until the last chapter, which was more of an epilogue. I also don’t understand how this relationship was able to blossom. They only spent time together while working on the case.

A few things I had issues with:
1. Where did the plane take off from? The book clearly says it was landing but all of the video and paperwork states it was taking off from Chicago. I guess the plane could have taken off and then landed once they got the bomb threat, but the book did not make that very clear.

2. Kate is supposed to be independent, I don’t like that every time she gets told to do something by Dave she goes along with it, and typically the reasoning is she is too tired to argue?

3. This has to do with the religious aspects of the book. I just don’t get it, the religion is pushed on the reader with long chapters talking about the book of Luke. This would be ok if it didn’t interrupt the best part of the book. I know it sets up the church scene where she gets saved, but it was hard to read.

4. The romance. Just why? I could have read the last chapter if the book and gotten the same relationship building that is in the rest of the book, and ALL of the romance.

I gave the book 3 stars because I really enjoyed the mystery and the story overall, but I wish that the romance would have either been more or taken out completely.

Read this book in one day, it was a amazing story full of real life passions and struggles. I will definitely be reading the next books!

*Update* I enjoyed the book for all the reasons mentioned below. I found the backstory and the resolution much more believable than the prequel to the series. This book survives round two of the purge from my personal collection.

Reading this book brought back memories of how much I loved them back when I read them for the first time in high school. (Aka back when I thought 30something was old...). The plot moves along well. Henderson introduces the O'Malley family well avoiding page upon page of introduction and backstory. She wisely leaves that for each character's own story. One thing I found interesting was the difference in airport security. This book was written and takes place before 9/11, such a huge difference.
I highly recommend this book and series and can't wait to read the rest of them.

I first read this book as a high schooler around 2002 (I think). I loved Dee Henderson's crisp and idealistic writing style. The Negotiator read exactly like a romantic comedy, a rags-to-riches story with lots of back & forth dialogue and cute bantering. I know some people take issue with "perfect" Christian characters, but honestly, I read these types of books as an escape, so I don't have a problem with it. There's also the mystery of the bomb on the airplane. Henderson deftly writes suspense that supersedes most Christian mystery authors out there.

Now, the O'Malley books have become comfort reads for me. (Also Dee Henderson's books always make me hungry for popcorn and donuts, with the copious mentions of sweet treats.) I'm a Christian, so I don't take issue with the Christianity (also idealized btw). I enjoy how Henderson brings up issues like justice, prayer, the Bible, etc in real conversations.

Recommended if you enjoy a little suspense mixed with romantic comedy and if you don't mind some cheesy dialogue on Christianity.

Quotes:
People that stood for something made the best friends. (page 50)

She sighed. "Sometimes I envy you... You can still hope." (page 186)

3 stars for this book seems pretty generous, while 2 seems a little off. I found this book to be very dry -- other reviewers have mentioned "suspense" which was "nail-biting" -- I'm not sure what book I read, but I'm pretty positive it wasn't the same one. I like books that keep me on the edge of my seat, where I can't wait to find out what happens next... and I didn't find that anticipation here.

I do like the concept of 7 orphans bonding together, becoming so much more than friends and creating a family of their own. I don't even mind how perfect, intelligent, and wealthy they are. Maybe it was just the mood I was in, but I thought the execution and style could have been played out so much better.

I love the questions that the non-believer in the book asked and the storyline was amazing as well

As always, really enjoy this series. Rereading is like visiting old friends. :)

Such a fantastic series! Im so excited to be reading each one of these. This one was a fabulous book and i loved reading Kate's story. Dave is one of my favourite leading men. Dee Henderson does such a wonderful job. Her writing is awesome
