I am very surprised by my rating of this book. Because the first half of the book... I did not enjoy.
When I bought it, I didn't know it was a book about faeries (the dark/horror/twisted/violent/cruel ones, not the sexy ones). Either way, I don't enjoy reading about faeries. I don't know why. I love fairy tales and folk tales and nature, but something about faeries just annoys me. And this one had some very disturbing scenes in the first half concerning small children, from a child's perspective. I ... nope.
But there was enough mystery and foreshadowing that I wanted to give it a try (and it's a rather short book) so I read on. And oh boy, did things change around the halfway point, and I love the direction the book took from there on. I was on the edge of my seat and couldn't stop reading until I finished it then.
Do I know what actually happened in this book? Nope. But that's basically the point, and I'm loving it.
Still, look up trigger and content warnings, there are some things on page but even more between the lines. Which kind of makes it worse. So just be warned.

This was a very, very strange book. I was expecting a normal psychological thriller or another normal murder mystery. Instead, this was a really deep dive into childhood trauma, psychosis, and how the mind finds ways to cope. The protagonist is insanely easy to sympathize with and all of her actions align easily with her past and her illness. Everything in this book makes sense, which is so much easier said than done.

It’s a deep dive into psychosis that feels so real. Cassie’s life and imagined details are so vivid and its always clear exactly where they stem from. The Faerie world in this book is so rich and scary. Not going to lie, it really freaked me out. This book was scary, deep, and I flew through it. Overall, I really, really liked it.

I gave this book a high 3 stars, i enjoyed it, it was a good read , but not my favorite or something i would ever reread.

I will say i didn't expect what i read , based on the  book summary, I thought i was going to get a spooky haunted house or a something weird and fantastical in the forest. what we got was different but not bad. I would warn that there are dark topics brought up that may be triggering to people (child abuse, mental health, etc).

The best way to describe this story without giving spoilers is to compare it to another. I found this type of story can be taken two ways you can either believe the fantastical, the supernatural, the magic or you can believe the more logical the more mundane reasoning and its to the reader to chose. best example i can think of is the movie and book Pan's Labyrinth by Guillermo del Toro where a girl see's and interacts with fairies. as the watcher you can take the story as fantastical and true or see it as a little girl living in a fantasy to coup with trauma, fear and sadness in her life.

this book was very similar , but brought up some even darker topics, that using supernatural elements made it easier to read.

If you like dark, fantastical thrillers, then i would recommend this book.
