"It ought to make us feel ashamed when we talk about like we know what we're talking about when we talk about love." Raymond Carver in What We Talk About When We Talk About Love
Despite its title and the quite romantic vibe that it might give off to people, the stories are not all about love. In just 131 pages, the collection presents 17 short stories about the common people with their common lives and their common problems.
The stories are short, with less than 10 pages each, but Carver's writing hooks the readers in, often right from the first sentence or paragraph. We are invited to witness what happens in the characters' lives and how they love and hurt one another.
In the titular story, the characters --two couples-- are talking about love based on their own experience. The story elaborates on different perspectives on love, and how love can come and wither, and there is nothing we can really do about love. In other stories, we are presented by love between friends, parents and children, as well as the moments shared among strangers that do not necessarily resemble love, but still have meanings for those who are involved.
Some stories take me by surprise, revealing so much depth with so little words. Perhaps, this line sums up the collection best: "There was this funny thing of anything could happen now that we realized everything had."
