Really enjoyed these stories. heartbreakingly real, very slice of life kind of stories with no obvious resolution, simply a glimpse into real people's lives, even if it's fiction. Have never read Carver's writing before and have to say he's tremendous. Builds just visuals with simple strokes, and says so much without really saying it. Enviable writing talent.

if I'm truthful, this book is a 3.5.
something about it was enticing, a collection of short stories of the struggle of being in love - the fights, the discussions, the adventures.
but another part was incredibly frustrating. several times during this collection of short stories I asked why? why did I just read this? what was I meant to take from this story that went nowhere and ended without conclusion? what's the life lesson of a man being kicked out by his girlfriend and her astrology loving daughter and smashing a window on his way out? lil bit of a flex, but I already know not to smash windows.
but other stories were romantic and cute. my favourite was the man who was clearly in a
tumultuous time in his life - moving out of his home perhaps due to his wife/husband leaving him and selling all of his possessions. then a young, in love, fun having couple come by and they share a drink and a laugh and a dance and as a reader you think wow maybe life ain't so bad but then the girl bullies him for being a weird creepy man after the fact to her friends and you're like ah yeah life is shit I remember.

it's hard to rate a collection of stories but my favorites are "what we talk about when we talk about love," "gazebo," and "a serious talk."
