some stories had good premises but weren't executed as well as I'd hoped. A lot of the stories were about men being assholes which is not something I'm super into reading.

it did what it set out to do very well. short vignettes of strangers' lives, like peeking into their windows for a minute. i feel like it could've mixed in a few happier ones though

Unfortunately, I found this to be extremely overrated. Just a lot of brooding characters sipping whiskey, lighting cigarettes, and hating their spouses. Minimalism and moodiness do not automatically equal depth.

I get that it’s from the 80s and Carver clearly isn’t good at writing women, but it’s a bit too Bukowski-esque for me.
