I had no intention of reading this today. I was unpacking a box of books I'd recently ordered and opened this up to read just a few sentences. A few sentences became a few paragraphs and a few paragraphs became a few pages and a few pages became the whole book. Luckily this is only 177 pages and there is plenty of daylight left.

This was good - if good can also mean painful and frustrating and infuriating and an extremely well written examination of race (racism) and poverty and love and family and sexuality with some of these topics being loud and in your face and some of them subtle and just barely above the surface.

I was so impressed with the writing that I would have been perfectly ok if I'd had zero emotional attachment. Yet I did cry. And I did have to pull away to mull over my thoughts when I became choked with anger and then immediately struck with guilt that I have no idea what this life is like, haven't had to live one minute in these shoes.

Hard to determine my thoughts on this one. The writing was good, but didn't fully capture me. The story of brothers growing up in poverty though was resounding.

This story moves back and forth through time, unfolding the loss and grief of a brother. How this has shaped him and has left his mother in profound grief. A friend from the past returns to the neighborhood, urging the family to the their grief to move forward.
