2.5-2.75 for sure.

Is it an important story? Yes. The writing sure did not do it justice. Following the aftermath of a family tragedy, our narrator Micheal takes us on an incoherent, boring journey on what ultimately lead them there. So many characters yet only one is fully fleshed out, and NONE have anything to add but painful at times useless details. The relationship between the main character and his brother is quite interesting but difficult to follow given how the book is organized from random time jump to time jump. The passages are unnecessarily describe during irrelevant scenes but rushed during important ones.

I would not go out of my way to say this was terrible, but I do think that there are better books out there that touch on the atrocities of police brutality and racism through an immigrants lens much better than this books did.

Michael was a bland narrator, and the pacing of the book left much to be desired. It felt as though the synopsis of the book was for a much longer novel than Brother actually was.

3.5 stars ⭐️ A single immigrant mother trying to raise her two black boys in a system that is stacked against them. Good writing, drawing you into this neighbourhood in Toronto.
