A tangled story of two brothers whose Trinidadian immigrant mother is working too much you surprise them as she'd l like. They live in housing projects in Scarborough, are categorized by teachers as low track. They struggle with identity and how they are seen and treated. L limited plot although there are lots of vignettes and there sorry is complex.

Accidentally read this all in one sitting. A false front of callous bravado and our own fucked-up society underneath. This is fine. Deeply sad. Deeply tender. Deeply, deeply, deeply.

Heart breaking and beautiful.

I read this because the film adaptation was so excellent, though I wonder what the experience would have been like if it was the other way around. This novel was quiet and touching, and the film expanded and opened up the world of the book in the way that only the best film adaptations do (Call Me By Your Name, Scarborough, Brokeback Mountain).
