A wonderful exploration of brotherly love, and the pressures on young men living around gang culture. A short but powerful read.
emotional

Beautiful narrative and very compelling. Very good sense of pacing and the book was the exact length it needed to be.

Less than 200 pages, yet this book left me with a lot more to think about than the average read. Taking place in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) it was a glimpse of an immigrant family who came to Canada in the hopes of a better life. Michael's mother works as many jobs and as much OT in order to provide for him and his older brother, Francis, with the hopes of them having a better life than what she could provide.

It was definitely a hard read, and even though it was short, it took me a few days to get through it. And although it wasn't exactly a happy read, there were some sweet (heartbreaking) moments between the brothers, it felt very real and true.

What an emotional piece of literature. I read this alone on my flight and it was amazing. As a resident of Toronto, I knew the places and the streets he was talking about, and it hurt as much as it felt real to me. Bravo sir!

I'm going to take a break from my regular video review to do a written one as I am tending to a sick cat and am not in any frame of mind to make a video . So I just finished the book and I have to say it was very good . A simple and painful view of the death and live of a brother and the other "death" of the mother. The sorrow and pain is palpable though out this book . I spent my time wanting to find out what happened next and almost afraid of the new pain that would be shown in the next page. None of the characters seemed to really catch a break here and in this story the cops were ,really the villain. It was really interesting to read a Canadian point of view . I cant say it was an enjoyable read but, it was a potent read . One that will show you that life is really not as bad as you think and that it can always be worse.

Now on to the actual construction of the book , here is were I was not as impressed. Firstly, the cover art is harsh to look at and every unpleasant to the eye and blurry witch does not call you to read. There was also page breaks as if for new chapters with no chapter numbers on them , this I found really upset the flow of the read. Other then that the writing was very real to the time and the chapters (as they are) are short and makes you feel as though you are reading quickly witch is a plus . All in all this book has a forever home with me because when I feel life sucks I will read this and feel better .

painfully beautiful. a book everyone should read.
