this read follows the story of two brothers and their single mother growing up in an immigrant working class neighbourhood in scarborough.

it follows their youth with their mother working various jobs to keep them afloat while refusing any help. the eldest brother francis does his best ability to emotionally support his mother and brother but once gang violence starts to erupt in their neighbourhood, things take a turn for the worst.

this novel encompasses ideas of generational trauma, stereotypes, police brutality, poverty, immigration, racism, gender roles, mental illness, and love in under 200 pages.

There was an overwhelming sadness every time I picked up this book but the tears did not fall until the last page of this haunting story of family and community. A beautifully written story that I highly recommend to all who want to feel connected to characters who come to life from the first sentence until the very end and will stay with you forever.

Strongly recommend! Immersive, very interesting story, made me want to write a review for the first time.

There is a lot packed into this very short book. The characters are rich and compelling and I found the writing taught and touching and funny. I loved the movie too and I think this might be a rare instance where I'm glad I saw the movie first.

Beautiful. Heartbreaking. Haunting.

Touching and humbling, Brother is a story of hardships and injustices, strengths and understandings, through family, love, and compassion. A short read but concise, to the point and without feeling rushed - past and present alternate, flowing naturally and with the ease of a linear account. I am glad David Chariandy's writing is getting the attention it deserves, his style is pure and simple, and powerfully beautiful. A perfect example of less is more...

Beautiful, thoughtful, and provoking. I just wish it was longer.
