This book broke my heart by showing how violence can just repeat itself within the same family.
The graphic novel was beautifully illustrated and and the words of Jason Reynolds were powerful.
Even though it is a graphic novel I would say that it is definitely for a more mature audience.

How does this book manage to be so beautiful? Not only the art, but the writing as well! And I know this is something weird to say, but it feels like the art and writing go hand in hand, versus competing for space. (Which happens in a LOT of graphic novels, lol)
I felt to much empathy for the main character, he lost a brother. He has no control, but he has one way to control something-- to follow the rules. He doesn't think of the consequences, or what will happen. He's only thinking of that one action, the one act, that will make everything.. not as it was before, but at least.. better, somehow.
What really makes this book unique is the spirits. Ghosts of the past, who are still affected by the present, come to haunt the main character as he rides an elevator, about to get vengeance for his brother.
These ghosts soon reveal what he is, WHO, the main character is-- a boy who's never held a gun, and who's struggling with the pain and anger of loosing his brother. We see Will (the main character) realize how the people around him have been affected by not only gun violence, but also, how, in essence, 'an eye for an eye' does make the world go blind. I found the narrative really compelling and grappling, and I couldn't but the book down! The art, the ability to see the color palette change, or the line work, and other things on the page, add to the free verse that is used within the book. We are able to not only read about what Will is feeling, but also SEE what Will is feeling. The art adds this hurtful emotional punch to the narrative that the words couldn't achieve alone.
All in all, I love this book, and I can't wait to add it to my graphic novel collection, I also can't wait to read it again to have my heart broken. Will is such an empathetic, well written character, and his story is not only amazingly done and well written, it's also realistic, and the ending adds more of an impact to the narrative.

En veldig sterk og rørende bok om voldens onde sirkel..
Gorgeous, moving, heartbreaking. An incredibly emotional read!

As one of my favourite books, I really loved the beautiful artwork in this graphic novel.
The ending was almost more impactful due to the imagery and I found myself enjoying the new experience considering this is my third re-read of this book.
The only negative I'd say is some things were cut out and used within the artwork, which took away from Jason Reynolds beautiful writing. If anyone wants to pick this up, I'd suggest they read the original book first or they'll be missing a big chunk of it.
