Loved it.
I did enjoy it enormously but I could not stop myself from comparing it with my absolute favorite historical fiction story, I, Claudius. Since they both deal with some of the same people it was very difficult to put aside the ideas and feelings I had about them from reading Robert Graves' masterpiece.
The writing was perfect for me and so was the pacing.
It goes on my favorite historical fiction list:)

In Augustus brengt John Williams het verhaal van Gaius Octavianus die op negentienjarige leeftijd de macht in handen krijgt na de moord op zijn oom Julius Caesar. Samen met zijn vrienden Marcus Agrippa, Salvidienus Rufus en Maecenas komt hij terecht in een wereld van eigenbelang, complotten, machtsmisbruik, corruptie en verraad. Hij speelt het spel echter zeer berekend en slaagt erin zijn vijanden te slim af te zijn. Hij wordt de eerste keizer van Rome onder de naam Augustus.
Het verhaal is geschreven in briefroman. Zowel vriend als vijand schrijft, in het moment of achteraf, waardoor je een zeer divers beeld krijgt van Augustus en het leven in Rome. Ieder van hen heeft een eigen stijl en dat maakt het verhaal levendig en boeiend. John Williams koos bewust voor deze vorm om te vermijden dat het geschiedkundig werk zou worden. Hoewel de briefroman niet mijn favoriete genre is, heb ik heel erg genoten van dit boek en heeft het mijn interesse in de Grieks-Romeinse Oudheid opnieuw aangewakkerd. Het leest niet als een sneltrein en heeft wat tijd nodig om op gang te komen, maar dat vond ik niet storend. Ik genoot ervan te lezen over het leven in het Romeinse Rijk en had met momenten het gevoel er middenin te zitten. Wat ik wel lastig vond waren de vele namen en relaties. Een stamboom of overzichtje achteraan het boek was handig geweest.
Net als Stoner is ook Augustus prachtig geschreven. Het bewijs dat John Williams een fantastische schrijver is.

John Williams Augustus could be called historical fiction, he creates written accounts for his characters and regardless of how well they represents a truth it adds characteristics that don't properly reflect the figures as they actually were, he adds historical quotes throughout his fictional letters/journals/memoirs ect, it would probably be easier to recognise them with a physical book rather than the audio I listened too, they add to the impression of accuracy but ultimately it can't avoid the fictional element, the positive of this approach is that he can make the history come alive in a way that only first hand accounts or fiction can, rather than dry academy we get a poetic retelling of what was true life for these people, in this way it's a Tolstoyan history, a living moment with depth of feeling and thoughts, I find it interesting the way William uses primary sources to create his tale, in this the fictional accounts are the sources for our primary sources creating an interesting circle that allows Williams to add bias as they exist in what survived while making them personally correspondences he can shine some light on the truth, I thought this was terrifically done.
