I had a hard time getting into this book in the beginning but as I read I can see why some have really enjoyed it. I really enjoyed the world building in this book. It was done with so many layers that at times it felt like another character in the book. The author's writing style was rich and intense. There are a few point of views and that can seem like there's a lot going on but they do come together in the end. Overall it was an ok read!

Thank you Historical Fiction Virtual Book Tours and Tom Beckerlegge for sharing this book with me!

This is an alternate reality historical fiction that is unlike anything that I have ever read. With a vast range of characters from different socioeconomic, religious and political classes. This book is a mastery on the confluence of characters.

Not for me.
Before the story even started I found myself confused. There were so many names and so much information thrown at me, I knew almost instantly this would not end well.
Once the story got going I was into it for a while, but unfortunately I didn’t find it good enough to be that long. This book was not fun to read

Each of the books sections focussed on a different character/set of characters within the city, with varying degrees of overlap. Though you experience the story through these snapshots, it feels continuous, I suppose because the city itself is really the main character. The book had all the dark comedy of a real history - with absurd moments of levity among the intrigue and darkness.

Cool. Very confusing. Weird depictions of women and POC. Otherwise, it was cool to watch a city spiral into its downfall. Tommasso or wtv was weird asf….

I really wanted to love this novel but I think I thought it was going to be something it wasn't. After waltzing my way through books like The Night Circus and Caraval I was hoping for a similar vein .... But this book touched on much darker topics. This story will definitely appeal to some but didn't quite float my boat
