I don’t know what the hell I just read? Hyper violent and no one has a happy ending but I guess they’re gangsters so I don’t want them to?

Off to see the film tonight!

Wow this Graphic novel goes fast!
Definately a must read for fans of 1970s, NYC, Boss ladies, & mafia movies.
I watched & loved the movie but this feels faster paced & the storyline was changed for the adaptation.

In 1970’s New York, the Irish mob is running rampant in Hell’s Kitchen. When three gangsters: Johnny, Jimmy, and Rob are sent to prison, their wives are left alone uncertain of their future. Kath, her sister Raven, and Angie soon find themselves collecting loan shark payments to keep themselves afloat.

During collecting one of the loan shark payments, a man disrespects Kath and she responds by killing him. After Kath commits the murder, this leads to a path of murder, lies and betrayal. Kath acts a the leader of the group, Angie is the muscle and Raven is an inactive participant until a fight with her husband sets her on her own path of death and mayhem. The ladies eventually expand their business yet continue to kill in order to protect their growing business.

Soon word spreads about their exploits and they attract attention from a gangster named Gargano. The women strike a deal with Gargano but then encounter problems when their husbands are released from prison early and want to take back their business. Unfortunately, Kath,Raven and Angie are drunk with power and refuse to give it up.

After the women make it clear to their husbands that they are independent and don’t need them. During this time, Kath and Raven’s relationship deteriorates and eventually, they are no longer on speaking terms.

By the end of the novel, several people are dead, relationships are permanently destroyed. Overall, this graphic novel is dark, violent and in a weird sort of way, this novel promotes female empowerment in a twisted sort of way.

My biggest problem with The Kitchen is that it's about half the book it should be - I would HAPPILY read another volume filling in all the work that Raven, Kath and Angie do to consolidate their hold on the Irish mob in 1970's Boston. Watching the three women change once their husbands are locked up, watching them become their own people out of the masculine shadow, was a really great, tight read. I'm deeply impressed with the amount of character development all three go through, and how even the most minor background characters end up feeling colorful and whole. The story isn't the most surprising; it plays out much like an old Greek tragedy, but the true strength of the book is in the development of the three leads.

Wow this was brutal... i don’t think this was for me. I didn’t enjoy this a ton. It’s not the book’s fault and it’s by no means bad, but it was a little confusing in the beginning because you’re suddenly thrown into this story and since this is just one volume, it kind of takes you about half of it to get to know who’s who ( there’s too many names to keep track of). Also, the jumps from one scene to the next felt quite sudden for me and it took me out of the story because each time i’d be confused and had to figure out again what was happening. It felt like i just read the summary of a story, instead of a whole story and i think i would’ve loved it more if i got to spend more time getting to know each character and just following them more in depth. But other than that, it was for sure interesting.

Also i feel like i should mention that there is a lot of killing in here so if you’re sensitive to that kind of stuff then i would probably recommend you not read this, otherwise, if the story sounds interesting to you then go ahead.

True rating 3.5- this was fun, but I read it right after finishing The Godfather so it was just alright. Happy I read it, would recommend to others, just okay for me.

I loved this comic. Ir read like a Scorsese picture and was gritty. I love the characters in this and I am excited to see the adaptation of this. It's a pretty groovy story, set in a 70' Hell's Kitchen. If you enjoyed "The Deuce" on HBO, you'll enjoy this comic too.
