A true classic of a well written spooky ghost story and the most fun I've had with Dickens outside of A Christmas Carol.
This was a lonesome post to occupy (I said), and it had riveted my attention when I looked down from up yonder. A visitor was a rarity, I should suppose; not an unwelcome rarity, I hoped? In me, he merely saw a man who had been shut up within narrow limits all his life, and who, being at last set free, had a newly awakened interest in these great works. To such purpose I spoke to him; but I am far from sure of the terms I used; for, besides that I am not happy in opening any conversation, there was something in the man that daunted me.

When a passer-by happens upon a signalman's hut, he takes it upon himself to stop and talk to the lonesome signalman. Gaining his trust, the signalman soon tells a tale of a ghostly apparition which appears to forewarn of accidents on the railway.
Riveting and brought to life with 3D atmospheric sounds, this was a really enjoyable listen. 4 stars.

Originally I heard this book as part of an anthology audiobook and really enjoyed it. This was my attempt to see if I would enjoy this story in a different media version. Happy to say it wasn’t a fluke. I really enjoyed this short story by Mr. Dickens and am actually curious about his other works. I’ve only read “A Tale of Two Cities” and despised it wholeheartedly. This short story has made me reconsider if I should give Mr. Dickens a true second chance as I have wanted to read classic novels recently. This Victorian ghost story was totally great and I feel the proper way to be introduced to the work of Mr. Dickens.
