read it after a lot of weeks of it being in the TBR list and i loved the writing. Though the plot and the characters' feelings were not so comprehensible to me, i have to give it all up for Bharati ji's writing. the way he weaves the personality of Sudha and chander in his words. oh man, Hindi does justice to it. here are a few of the lines i have highlighted:
"घर-भर से अल्हड़ पुरवाई और विद्रोही झोंके की तरह तोड़ फोड़ मचाती रहने वाली सुधा, चन्दर की आँख के इशारे पर सुबह की नसीम की तरह शान्त हो जाती थी। दोनों का एक-दूसरे के प्रति अधिकार और आकर्षण इतना स्वाभाविक था जैसे शरद की पवित्रता या सुबह की रोशनी।"
"अगर सभी मन्दिर के कंगूरे का फूल बनने की कोशिश करने लगें तो नींव की ईंट और सीढ़ी का पत्थर कौन बनेगा?"
"उसने देखा कि उसके जो भी मित्र राजनीति में गये, वे थोड़े दिन बाद बहुत प्रसिद्धि और प्रतिष्ठा पा गये मगर आदमीयता खो बैठे।"
"तुमने अंग्रेजी शायरी छान डाली है लेकिन जिंदगी से जितना मुझे साबिका पेड़ चुका है, अभी तुम्हें नहीं पड़ा. अक्सर कब, कहाँ और है कैसे मन अपने को हार बैठता है. यह खुद हमें पता नहीं लगता। मालूम तब होता है जब जिसके कदम पर हमने सिर रखा है, वह झटके से अपने कदम घसीट ले। उस वक्त हमारी नींद टूट जाती है और तब हम जाकर देखते हैं कि अरे हमारा सिर तो किसी के कदमों पर रखा हुआ था और उनके सहारे आराम से सोते हुए हम सपना देख रहे थे कि हमारा सिर कहीं झुका ही नहीं। लेकिन मैंने देखा कि नाजुक अशआर तेरे दिल को उस जगह छू लेते हैं जिस जगह उसी को छू सकते हैं जो अपना दिल किसी के कदमों पर चढ़ा चुका हो। और मैं यह नहीं कहती कि तूने मुझसे छिपाया है। कौन जानता है तेरे दिल ने खुद तुझसे यह राज छिपा रखा हो।""

This book is a true gem in Hindi literature. The kind of love this book shows is so pure and godly that it touches my heart. This book made me cry as well as laugh.
The amount of strength you need to be like Sudha can't be measured. The love and devotion she had for chander is unmatchable. I really loved this book.

It didn’t take me long to realise why most people were trying to tell me to be strong while reading this. But mostly it was also the story, the writing and the manner in which the book is presented. It’s an old story and so most readers will not be able to associate with it instantly, or will probably take time to get deep into the story.
I on the other hand feel sorry to not write this in Hindi. It feels that there aren’t enough words in dictionary for me to do justice for this book. But somewhere this book reminds me of myself, and how the feeling of guilt, or shame or confusion or even purity keeps clouding.
This isn’t just a story about Chander and Sudha, it’s a reflection of people like us with desires like ours. The mistakes we commit, the forgiveness we don’t receive and the words we speak; it’s definitely a book which destroys something inside you but only if you still have it.

A truly Hindi romantic novel. Amazingly identifies and starkly presents the hollowness of the social institutions like marriage. Some standard practices of the time it's set in come off as sexist but the characters with their philosophical enquiries into the world they live in, present a front that is liberal for their own times.
As for the romantic elements, the novel explores the perspectives around platonic love and physical relations with someone, individually and together. One is too pure to be touched and the other presents a superficial defence to hide its shallowness as presented by the author intentionally.
