"'When we have discarded the inedible, what remains, however unlikely, will have to be dinner.' Mr Holmes paused as though struck by an important thought."
This view on Doyle's detective is just plain fun! Here, Mrs. Hudson takes center stage with her analysis of crime through the eyes of who she is and what she does - a housekeeper! Introducing this minor character as a major one is brilliantly crafted. Somehow she is true to the original persona written, but Davies lets her blossom. As a detective-housekeeper, there is even a parallel to Holmes's Professor Moriarty.

While this may not appeal to all die hard Sherlock Holmes fans, I really enjoyed this novel. I liked the fact that a background character (and a woman) takes the lead in this mystery. I will be checking out the second in the series.
Well written, with a strong sense of place-- but I just couldn't get past the hump of Sherlock Holmes being dumb and Mrs. Hudson having all the good ideas.
