I have really come to love Truman Capote's writing, and these three short stories only deepen my appreciation for his style. He provides such wonderful descriptions of his characters and scenery that you feel like you are right there in the story. These stories were wonderfulf, and I think I'll start a new tradition to read these each year during the holidays.

This along with A Christmas Memory and a Thanksgiving Visitor are such treasure troves of short memoirs. Capote's writing is magnificent as always and these looks into his childhood seem so authentic and personal. I love that he chose to write and publish these bits of his memories!
Warmly nostalgic-this must be that time that so many Christmas carols recollect as the good old days-when friends may have been few but were the truest you could ever meet, and one was “poor and content to be so” because firelight and the warmth of love was all they needed. One can almost smell the fruitcake and picture Queenie’s twinkling eyes as she hungers for the bone hidden for her in the tree. A little story that helps to make the season bright, for sure!
My husband and I read this book outloud to each other a couple days before each Christmas, usually with eggnog to sip and a crackling fire near our slippers.
Who ever draws the short straw and does the reading, has the tissues near them. It is a wonderful story of the power of friendship, the true meaning of Christmas, and the ache of being a child in a world of adults.
Don't neglect this book. Its brilliant.

omg!! the first piece of literature of this year that i’ve had the chance to experience and it was an absolute treat.
this is the first (and not the last) work that i’ve read by truman capote and i’m very happy to say that it was beautiful.
the writing it’s such a delight; beautiful imagery, very accessible writing and so warm with a bit of nostalgia.
the story follows seven-year-old buddy and sixty-something miss sook, who are cousins and best friends. they live together and share an incredible bond. both of them share a very special memory of preparing fruitcakes together!
"oh my, it’s fruitcake weather!"
the way the story was described allow me to feel the smell of fruitcake and fell how this tradition was so important for both of them.
it reminded me so much about those traditions that make the holidays special and gives our heart some coziness.
a recommended read! very accessible and fast to read.
