An absolutely beautiful story. Was moved to tears at the end, in the best way
Wonderfully human and sad--poignant. A need to love parents even when you dislike them is so beautifully expressed. Especially well-told from child's perspective--terrors and comforts.
" 'I'll give you what I learned from all this,' he said. 'Accept what people offer. Drink their milkshakes. Take their love.' "

Short story, that like his One Christmas and A Thanksgiving Visitor, is based on Capote's childhood being raised by an array of aunts, uncles, and cousins. This story focuses on his much older cousin and their Christmas preparations, which include making and sharing fruitcakes, creating gifts, getting into trouble, and finding joy.
A short & sweet holiday story about what's most important around Christmastime.
"Of course there is a Santa Claus. It’s just that no single somebody could do all he has to do. So the Lord has spread the task among us all. That’s why everybody is Santa Claus. I am. You are."

For our book club Christmas party, we decided that a short story or two would be enough to discuss (everyone is strapped for time, let alone reading time), so I picked this one, and it was truly wonderful albeit very sad. I'm now reading the rest of the collection, and having read One Christmas, the second story in the collection, I reread A Christmas Memory which now makes more sense and is even more moving. I see this becoming an annual reread.
What a beautiful short story that brought me in and kept my attention during each point in the Christmas journey.
