I read this every Christmas. Can't help but love this little tale. Ages 10 up.
Read as part of the collection [b:The Complete Stories of Truman Capote|15798123|The Complete Stories of Truman Capote|Truman Capote|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1347585429l/15798123._SX50_.jpg|794].
From BBC Radio 4: Book at Bedtime
'Imagine a morning in late November. A coming of winter morning ...'
Truman Capote considered 'A Christmas Memory' one of his best works of fiction. Kerry Shale reads the first of two parts as seven-year old Buddy and his best friend, the elderly Miss Sook, prepare for the festive season.
'"Oh my" she exclaims, "It's fruitcake weather. Buddy, stop stuffing biscuit and fetch our buggy. We've thirty cakes to bake."'
Part 2/2
In the woods, Buddy and Miss Sook search for a tree. '"It should be" muses my friend, "twice as tall as a boy. So a boy can't steal the star." The one we pick is twice as tall as me.'
Read by Kerry Shale
Abridged and produced by Jane Marshall.
A Jane Marshall production for BBC Radio 4.

I've never read anything by Truman Capote, but I'm going to have to seek out more of his work. This little tale captures perfectly the friendship between he and an elderly cousin and the love they shared. Though it could have been sad, reading this story leaves you richer than when you started.
