A) I’m so glad I reread some Shakespeare before this, but also technically not necessary. B) this was so well written. I loved the structure and the perspective of the main character. C) only reason it’s not ranked higher is bc I think I saw the ending coming more than I’d like to admit but it still made my heart hurt a lot
This book blew my mind.
“Do you blame Shakespeare for any of it?”
The question is so unlikely, so nonsensical coming from such a sensible man, that I can’t suppress a smile. “I blame him for all of it,” I say.
Seven friends brought together by their love of Shakespeare at an elite arts college have their lives forever altered when that love turns to obsession and friendships turn to rivals and ultimately ends in murder. But what is truth and what is lie? How can you tell when everyone is an actor and lives their lives like they are on stage?
Rio creates this world where nothing exists but Shakespeare and this group. Yes, there are other students but they are outliers - they don't matter and they flicker around the edges because they, like us readers, are drawn to our group even if they can't figure out why.
Presented to us like it's a play, each section broken out in Acts, Rio tells the story of how it's not always how it appears on the outside. The inside of this group is broken, but just how much is a shocking reveal as the story unfolds. Oliver, our storyteller, just finished serving ten years in prison for murder. But did he do it? I questioned it multiple times. I thought I knew the story. But there were so many turns that I almost couldn't keep up. I was invested, hooked. I wanted to protect Oliver but I also wanted him to be smarter, stronger.
But that ending.
That ending.
Gutted me. That last line will is one that will stick with me and have me questioning everything.
This is not a book for everyone. Many will not like it. But this is now one of my all time favorites.
