There’s a pretty vast range in quality to these stories, but there are enough really solid ones for it to be worth it. The last one seriously freaked me out.
Well written short story but damn am I confused as to what went down lol. (I need to go back and reread this more slowly)
I can't remember why I'd put this on my list to pick up from the library but it arrived to my pile of holds a few weeks ago and so I picked it up and started reading through.
Thinking about this now, some of the stories weren't really that engaging for me. It seems an unreasonable expectation to think that every short story in a collection is going to be exhilarating, though.
A handful of the stories resonated strongly while others left me confused as to the behavior or motivations of the characters depicted.
I remember making notes on some passages in The Stepchild, The Breeze, and Life in the Heart of the Dead, so those stand out more in my memory.

Brutal, sad, and a little unhinged. Stories about people losing connection with others and themselves, and therefore going a little nuts. Makes me not miss NYC a little.
A really terrific collection of short stories. No need to skip or skim here. Ferris does a masterful job of exploring people, relationships, miscommunication and missteps.
It’s rare that I hate a book but this one was painful. Not a fan of using the R word either.
My favorite stories in the collection were: "The Dinner Party," "The Pilot," and "More Abandon (Or Whatever Happened to Joe Pope?).
On ice for now. It's well-written, for sure, but I not in the mood to read about desperate white people struggling to feel something.
