- Honestly, there was nothing really wrong with this book besides it feeling cheesy at times.
- I couldn’t get into it and kept having to force myself to read it. And then I remember I have free will and don’t have to read things I don’t want to😭💀
- Genuinely not a bad book! I might try again later!

Sawyer is a romance author in the midst of a dry spell. Mason is a celebrity about whom TMZ can't stop circulating romance rumors. They get stuck in an elevator together, sparks fly, and a one night stand (not in the elevator, thank goodness) ensues. And then, for #romancereasons, they run into each other again. They make a pact to "ruin romance" for each other so they can each focus on their careers.
Y'all this was FUNNY, it was HOT, and it was SO GOOD! I enjoyed seeing our MCs reluctantly fall for each other, then not dare to admit it, then mess it up bc of course they did, and then (again, for #romancereasons) watch them grand gesture their way to an HEA. This made fun of tropes while also using them to make the characters fall in love, and i love how clever that was! It had the potential to go off the rails somewhere, but it didn't! Excellent debut!

I was laughing so much while reading this book. If you love romcom jokes (or jokes about romcoms) you will get a kick out of it. I highlighted quite a bit of the book and can't wait to annotate the physical in January.
Sawyer had so many layers and I loved seeing them slowly get exposed with Mason. She is a firecracker and I need to find myself a mustard yellow coat.
Mason such a cinnamon roll. I loved that his character was the one romantic one who was writing futures from little signs and get swept up into having the perfect romance. It was refreshing to read about.
Also tights (iykyk).
This is Erin's debut book and I can't wait for more of her stories. Loved all the references to romcoms over the years.

I heard great things about Unromance from reviewers I follow, so while it wasn’t on my radar initially, and I balked a little at the inclusion of some tropes I don’t typically love (opening with a one-night stand, for example), I enjoyed this for the most part. I’ve realized that while I do have a line for how meta I want romances to be in terms of awareness of romance tropes (another recent DNF leaned into them obnoxiously hard), I feel Erin Connor struck a balance between the nods and allusions to, and spins on these tropes and not beating you over the head over overwhelming you with them.
The characters were an obvious strong point for me. I love that Sawyer is a romance author who obviously loves the genre and is knowledgeable about it, but is rather jaded about it in real life. She’s also bisexual, and while she does end up with a guy, I do like that her past relationship with a woman is pivotal to informing her motivations. Mason is similarly unlucky in love, being an actor whose love troubles have dominated the headlines, including a fresh breakup.
The romance and overall arc of the story is a little hokey, with them reenacting romcom tropes, but it’s fairly easy to follow, especially with the headings giving you an idea of what to expect. The chemistry between the two is solid, and carries the book, however, and while miscommunication does plague the second half in particular,.I remained invested throughout and rooted for them to work it out.
This was a pleasant surprise, and I’m open to reading more from Erin Connor in the future. I recommend this to readers who love meta romances and romcom tropes!
