3.5 stars, actually.
I guess I'm glad I read this? The first in this duology does leave on a massive cliffhanger just as Anna and Khiran find each other.
In this book, they get to live together for a long time and much of this is them keeping house and dealing with the repercussions of being on the run from the Huntress/First.
And its....a bit slow going. I guess what I liked so much in the first book-- being with Anna in various time periods, isn't as present in this second book due to plot. It's much more about Anna/Khiran together and the ever present threat of the First than anything else.
There is a final showdown at the end...and it doesn't quite satisfy. Maybe because I was waiting for something from Anna's human super power of caring to carry the day and it was more magical/deux es machina Tree related thing.
Anyway, I'm glad I read it to find out the resolution to Anna/Khiran's story, but it wasn't quite as satisying as I'd hoped. There were some fun details about post-World War II california, but fleshing that out more would also have been interesting.

Yeah so I loved this duology and I need more people to read it. It got trad published in between me reading the first and second books so congrats to the author!
The ending was perfect and I was about to be mad if things didn't go that way. There's 1 change I would have made but it doesn't affect how much I enjoyed the story.
My one critique is that the main confrontation seemed a bit anticlimactic and resolved a bit too easily.

I wish there was more written about The First/the family instead of most of the book revolving around fleeing. The First came across as a one dimensional villain and I wanted to learn more about the tree/its origin. Overall, I still enjoyed the wrap up of these characters.
