.... The author builds you up with great characters and makes the reader think they are being set up for that critical moment in life that explains it all. Yet, that's life. We are waiting for the build up to end. The pinnacle moment to happen where we can sit on a beach somewhere and say to ourselves, yup, this was worth it. Yet life goes on. There is no real great ending. Life goes on until it doesn't anymore. ......

Oh how I love this book, such beautiful writing, full of intrigue, and characters to love. Was worth the reread after watching the show to remember how good the book is

No thanks. Doerr’s prose is nice, but everything is so contrived. this book is well written and I can see why people like it but it left such a sour taste in my mouth. Disliked how Marie loure was written throughout the novel. She felt more like a description of a series of events than a character... talk about infantilizing a disabled character. Yutta’s child in the final chapter is given more agency. This whole book felt like the fantasy of a white male history major if you know what I mean. Other people said it better than me, but pass.
