I liked the idea of this book a lot, but with so many characters in a book this length, I felt like I never spent enough time with one character to get attached. It was continuously jumping, to the point where I felt like I was going through the motions instead of feeling the emotional impact. It's a shame because I liked the idea of many of these characters too, but they just weren't explored or fleshed out as much as I would have liked.

i appreciated the broad historical background/ depth in this novel but the writing felt detached and the characters were boring and two dimensionable in their own ways. i didn’t find myself rooting for any of them tbh, even the MC. there were lots of cliches and static moments and even though there was a lot of (realistic?) tragedy, it all felt very predictable to me. 1.5 stars.
