God this was beautiful. Knowing Aurelius' fate makes this book so much more harder to digest, but I almost have a few tears in my eyes.
The prose was just gorgeous.

This was...fine. I'm not sure reading about a couple of quiet days in the life of this emperor from 50 generations prior to all the other Nine Worlds stories added much to the lore. The afterword does say that the author intends to write more about Aurelius and so maybe this book provides needed set-up for whatever comes next, but based on all the other Nine Worlds books I've read so far, this one is entirely optional/skippable.

This is good, but it's really such a small snippet of such a grand theme and character's life that it feels a bit unsubstantial.  The ideas in it are great and the meditation and vision are worth reading, but it feels too much like either an the beginning of a book or an over-embellished koan for me to feel satisfied with it.  I think that my biggest problem with it is that it doesn't have the substance of human connection that is the main reason that I enjoy Goddard's work.  Instead, it feels like a set of promises of that kind of connection that we may never get to see kept.

Looking forward to more in this time period, with this character.

Feels a little unfinished - it’s just a small glimpse into the man who becomes Aurelius Magnus and it feels like it.

This sketch is clearly a companion piece and without the main body of work, unfortunately, it lacks substance.

A map, at least, would help.

Enjoyable by very short. Felt like a segment of a larger work.
