We read this for family book group. For kids who LOVE Minecraft, I would give it more stars. For adults... the writing is not good. Nate didn't finish and didn't like it while this is one of Alex's favorite books. Alex said he liked the suspense of the books, which prompted us to talk about other suspense books he might enjoy.

This book almost makes me want to play this game.
I can't believe I'm saying this, but I stole this book of my younger brother's shelf when I was bored, and it was actually pretty good!
I wanted the kid to wait until 4th grade to read this but it was on his 3rd grade teacher’s shelf.
My son, who I read this to and for, would give it a higher rating, but I was definitely not the target audience. I'll admit that it took the idea of a kid being pulled into a gaming world appropriately serious, and the author did some very detailed descriptions of what "real life" Minecraft would look like, but aside from this not being my preferred reading genre, there was soooo much repetition in the descriptions, I found myself often just skipping whole sentences as I was trying to read it aloud. A single paragraph would repeat in almost the exact same words how afraid characters were, with the same phrases used endlessly. the first time you read about fear "washing over him like a thunderstorm," it feels poetic and descriptive. The third time in a single chapter that same thunderstorm of fear hits the same character, it starts to get pretty old. I'm not really looking forward to continuing the series, but my kid is not a strong enough reader to get through them on his own, so looks like I'll be soldiering on. If he were just a little bit more confident, I'm sure for a mid elementary reader, this is absolutely fine and gripping reading. Just a sadly poor fit for me.
