I really liked that this book went back to the beginning, to the community from The Giver, but let us look in on it from Claire's perspective this time. I found her story fascinating in Parts I and II. The problem I have with this book is Part III. The whole Trademaster thing was something I liked about the 3rd book, Messenger, though I felt the book didn't go far enough with it. This book gave us a better look at Trademaster, and it was kind of a let down. Still, I really liked the story of Claire's journey and the various people she befriended along the way.

I was initially upset with Lois Lowry for giving away some key plot elements in her book tour speech, and I thought about putting the book down and not finishing it until I had forgotten what she'd said, which isn't as hard these days, but I decided to forge ahead. I am glad I did, because there were some surprises, which I enjoyed, and it was a satisfactory ending to the series.

The Giver is one of my favorite books, so I was eager to read Son to find out more about the community and the characters. It was fascinating (and disturbing) to see how the birth mother assignment worked, and to see the events of The Giver from another perspective. Once Claire left the community, my interest waned. I also felt the ending was weak.
