• this had a rough start, but picked up around 1/4 through
• i liked ariadne, although i felt like i liked her mostly because of how everybody interacted with her rather than because of her as a person
• phaedra was very interesting to follow too
• very morally grey characters -- you root for them because they deserve better but then they do awful things and you can't justify your support
• i enjoy learning the in depth versions of greek mythology, especially because we only ever learn the basics where the women were the problem, or where theseus was a great hero
• overall, it was a decent story but i felt detached from it quite a lot of the time

TWs: blood, child neglect, child abuse, death of animal, animal cruelty, lying about rape, gore, pregnancy, miscarriage, post-natal depression, rape, child death, emotional abuse, incest, sexism, body horror, abandonment, suicide (hanging)

Even though I had a hard time getting through the start of this book, I was engaged and enjoying it by the end. The first section was a lot of exposition starting from Ariadne’s childhood and I felt like I was trying to get through it to get to the bulk of the story. I wish that it was presented slightly differently in a way that felt more like the beginning of the story and not like the lead up to it. Certain things I wish had gotten more attention and depth. The bulk of the story I really enjoyed and liked the depth of the characters and their complicated relationships.

I was very annoyed with Ariadne but I found it really nice to see all the myths I know being woven together. It got very good over the second half, but the first half was just a bit boring

Theseus may be one of the most famous heroes of Greek mythology, but this retelling shows us Ariadne’s side of the story.

Before reading Ariadne, I only knew of the titular character for her role in Theseus’ escape from the labyrinth. I was surprised by both the rest of Ariadne’s story and my ignorance of it; the twists and turns—especially Ariadne’s eventual marriage—make for a dramatic story.
The Olympians are usually so cruel and capricious, both so much more and so much less than human. So it was interesting to see Dionysus, the god of wine and madness, no less, acting so compassionately to human women. And, though I was not surprised, his betrayal and the violence he used in pursuit of more power was a disappointment.

Happy ending meter (no specific spoilers, just the vibe of the ending):
Not happy at all. Even though the ending is tragic, it feels inevitable, which tempers the sadness somewhat.
