Brilliant! A bittersweet story with the perfect amount of angst and cuteness! I really love Saffron, and especially his relationship with his friends (Cylvan, of course, but also Hollow, the satyre, Copper) and how he pets Taran (who became such a sweet character). I can't wait to read more!

This series is Saffron’s story, and it does feel like Cylvan, at times, is more of a force of a plot who exists to be loved by Saffron than he is a fully realized character. It seems as though the narration already loves him, I feel sometimes as though I am being told why Cylvan is so great without being shown that he is by his actions. It could be a matter of my own personal taste, but by the third book, I guess I feel like I should understand Cylvan a bit more. I did like the moments Saffron got to push back at him, perhaps I’d just like to see more of that dynamic returned.

I really loved all of the new characters provided by the new setting, but I can’t say I found the new setting particularly compelling. I hope in the next book(s?) we can truly see more wild faerie stuff, as well as the place that was teased at the end of the book.

I’m on the fence about this book’s main antagonist, though I liked some of the mysteries that came along with them, and how that tied into the previous lore. The new antagonist had some moments that were truly scary and shivery, and did at least one thing that surprised me, but I felt that they were spelled out as being so unarguably bad and suspicious by the narrative that I kind of wondered why Saffron would put up with it even a little bit, even if he was incredibly desperate. Still, the climax of the book was every bit as exciting as the last two books and the stakes felt appropriately high. This latest set of consequences seems like it will narrows the focus that I felt the second and third books sometimes lost, so I’m excited for what’s to come.

One qualm I have with the style in which this was written was how many times it seemed to skip over dialogue by summarizing it instead of letting us spend time with the characters. I understand this was probably to keep pacing breezy, to get to the “good” stuff, but I think it would have gone further to convince me of Saffron’s relationships if we got to see the interactions more directly. I do not recall I had quite that much of an issue with this in previous books.

I thought the sex scenes we got in detail were a lot of fun. I’m glad that the spice level seems to be upping with each book. Personally, I’m all for more of these because I know how much I liked what Graves wrote in ‘A Bone in His Teeth.’

I noticed a spelling error and the issue of run-on sentences persists, but not to the point where I found the book unenjoyable. The Rainbow Crate edition of this book was just as beautiful as ever.
