Overall, this was a wild ride through a tame Jurassic Park where the people were the true monsters. I didn't read the plot summary before starting so, for me, this book had several twists that I didn't see coming.

Likes: "de-extincting" prehistoric animals is always a fun addition, and adding in a criminal investigation was a treat; the POV changes throughout which provided a big picture of what was actually happening; a bit of the good old "science gone too far" message which is a great basis for horror/thrillers.

Dislikes: the term "de-extincting"; several randomly placed comments on the weights, diets, and body composition of some of the characters; and the resolution.

The plot resolves, leaving room for a sequel/series, but I did feel some parts of the narrative were overly described and others seemed to be under. You follow along linearly by which I mean you are not meant to investigate or hypothesize along with the CBI Agent. This is not a mystery the reader can solve.

If you have read some Michael Crichton books (especially Jurassic Park and Congo) you can skip this one because you know how the story goes early on and you will compare it a lot to his books. If you do not know Crichton - go ahead and try this one. But read Crichton, too.

The story was okay, entertaining but predictable and the characters... The female lead, Frankie Cash, is apparently too fat but fitter than men would expect her to be. And we have to point that out several times, by herself and older men. And the last page - do you need to give them a maybe love story now? But props to her one sidekick Romanski, he actually respects Cash and her work.

3.5 stars.
