This might be the worst book I’ve ever finished. Despite the author beating the reader over the head with over explanation of every thought, action, and motivation delivered as tedious internal monologues, I still managed to have no connection to any of the characters or emotional response to any of their relationships. The concept of “show, don’t tell” was severely lacking here and I don’t think there was a single sentence where the reader could infer the mood/tone/motivations/contexts because everything was explicitly explained over and over and over again. It read more like a summary or explanation of an actual novel.
Synopsis:
"He thinks his secret is safe. But she knows the truth…
My husband is a doctor. He’s smart and charming and everybody trusts him. Except me.
Doctor Drew Devlin is not the respectable figure he makes out to be. The reason we moved to this beautiful, old property with a gorgeous view of the sea was because we needed to put our past behind us. It should’ve been a fresh start for us both.
Except I’ve discovered my husband has been lying to me again. He’s using the power he has in his job to mess with people’s lives, and to get exactly what he wants – no matter who it hurts.
But he’s underestimated me. I’ve had plenty of time, in this big, isolated house, to think about all of his mistakes.
And my husband has no idea what’s about to happen next…"
My Thoughts:
I had this book sitting on my "shelf" unread for a few months. While the synopsis drew me in, I expected an average thriller - I was wrong. This story had more twist and turns then I had expected. Told from both husband and wife's POV's I loved being inside their heads through this journey. There were a few twists in this book that I did not see coming which made the story so, so good. And the ending? Phenomenal! I definitely want to look into more books by Daniel Hurst.
Thank you to @netgalley and @bookouture for the gifted copy of this book.

Daniel Hurst has a new lifelong fan. This was such a solid psychological thriller. At one point I was beginning to think it was going to be a little dry for my taste but then I was hit with the twist! This was my first Daniel Hurst novel and I will definitely be diving into his backlist of novels. Fern was the perfect unreliable narrator. You really believe that her schemes are perfectly acceptable and warranted. The audio version of this book was amazing. The voice actors were perfect. The cozy British seaside village atmosphere was taken to the next level by the British accents of Fern and Drew! I would definitely recommend listening to this book to add a little razzle dazzle. (Yes, I’m American.) This was a dual POV for those wondering. I feel like the ending set the characters up for a possible sequel. I hope so!! The Doctor’s Wife is a perfect, fast-paced cozy British thriller! Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for the audio ARC of this novel.

We are told the Doctors wife from the points of view of Drew and Fern. Dr Drew and Fern were a happily married couple until Alice. I don’t want to say too much but I literally binge read this in two sittings because I couldn’t put it down or find a reasonable time to put it down. Daniel keeps the reader engaged with everything that’s going on.

WOW. I did not see that final twist coming and want to hear what happens!! This is my 2nd Daniel Hurst book and he has just been added to my list of authors that I will read whatever book they release! He's sooooo good with the unseen twists! Also the doctor - what a douche.
