The duality of Bruce Wayne versus Batman is one of the most fascinating aspects of The Dark Knight Returns. The Bat is written as an alter-ego to Bruce; Bruce struggles to suppress Batman, who wants to be out on the streets.
I also appreciate Batman acknowledging how many lives could have been saved if he'd just killed the Joker rather than cycling through him escaping, doing damage, and being sent back to Arkham. The resolution to the Batman/Joker story is phenomenal.
The relationship between Batman and Superman is also shown here, with Superman's character being a bit heavier than his usual self. I like it. Their final battle is brilliantly executed, and so is the ending.
Overall, this is one of the best Batman stories I've read. It deserves the hype around it, presenting a character study of Batman/Bruce Wayne that's unlike anything else. He writing is top-notch, and the art, though it isn't something I really go for, suits the story well enough. This is a must-read for any comic fan or anyone interested in Batman.

27/100 (2018 Reading Challenge)
A classic & cited by many as one of the greatest comics ever. I had read this one before, but was definitely worth a read again. Even if it is classed as non canon. It’s still a great read, maybe even because of that as it allows the author to do things that would normally not be done. It would be something good to use to try and get someone into comics. Although I am more excited to read Batman stories have not read with this collection, still really enjoyed this a second time. Love the prose and the artwork is distinctive too.
