adventurous dark fast-paced

Well, finally.

terrible...

A seminal work by all standard, this comic is the bar by which other will be judged. The story is dark - a little too grim dark for my tastes - but there is a vitality in it that cannot be denied. However, despite all that it is to admire in this book I did have issues with it. Frank Miller started the trend of grim dark for me and frankly, given his influence, you cannot deny how he helped shape the ethos of dark = real = better.

The treatment of Superman is a prime example of this. The story works but he has no respect or understanding of the character. Jerry Segal would have been appalled by the character's slavish devotion. Batman too doesn't fare better - Batman is dark yes but is still a hero; Miller's protagonist is barely one. So is it really Batman? Stepping back, the fact that this comic provokes is a sign of it strength. It'll never be a favourite of mine but that is ok too.
