A classic for a reason. Definitely really enjoyed the first two parts of the book in particular. It ushered the era of darker super-hero story telling.
The second half I enjoyed as well, but admittedly had a bit of trouble following exactly what happened. Not going to spoil that, but I’ll re-read this eventually ^^.

I’m gonna be honest dude, I only had one issues left of this, my dc universe ran out, and I have absolutely no intention of going back to it. It seems like almost every classic Batman story that gets this much attention is never as good as everyone says, I really was not enjoying this at all. This version of Bruce Wayne just is NOT for me.
Kind left me feeling.. meh. Too many coincidences and I thought Batman was out of character too frequently.
There was so much I didn't understand as I was reading this very complex graphic novel. Why did Batman take in the new Robin so easily? How did Batman get the Mutants & the Sons of Batman on his side? What's with the Harvey Dent subplot? Who in the world is Oliver? What happens to Superman after he averts the bomb on Corto Malese? And where is Corto Maltese, anyway? There were so many subplots that I gave up on some of them.
I didn't read this superhero story very well; I should have slowed down, done some research, done some rereading to fix up my comprehension. But I have too many things on my to-do list. I'm hoping some of these questions get answered when I talk with other librarians at the ARRT genre study group next week.
There were many things I liked about this book, though. I loved the full-page or half-page images of Batman in action--they took my breath away. I was amused by the constant media coverage; it made the action go super fast. Batman was a very sympathetic character--I liked getting his inner monologue, even while he was in the midst of crazy battle. And I like that he survived being buried alive; dude has staying power, as this book is out to prove.

This is what inspired some of the third movie. A must read for anyone who enjoys Batman, and I'll lend it to you if you like!
Doesn't hold up as well as [b:WATCHMEN|472331|Watchmen|Alan Moore|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1175041710s/472331.jpg|4358649], the other gritty superhero book of the same era, and parts of it feel oddly dated.
