Difficult to get through and graphics inconsistent (extremely rough). The medias' role overrides batman's story. Too many characters of very littly value.
I (mostly) get the hype now. Batman is a grizzled, relentless and broken old man with a death wish... I didn't always follow the plot (mutants and flying bomb babies anyone?), but the imagery is iconic and I loved how satirical it was (commentary on the 24/7 news cycle is just as relevant as ever).
It was, I think, more of a curiosity read for me. It was ok for me but it was not as great as I expected it would be. I enjoyed the story, the art, and the characters. I would have liked to have seen more of a large scale battle with more people involved (maybe it's the movie influencing me) and more of Joker and Harvey Dent. Overall, I enjoyed it but not as much as I thought I would. 3.5 stars.
Frank Miller's Batman is just freakin awesome. The artwork is dated, but the story of an old, bitter Bruce Wayne donning the mantle of the Batman and coming out of retirement because he just can't let things be is too good. This graphic novel is really a study of obsession at its finest. It's hard not to feel anything but pity for Wayne on his first encounters with the criminal underworld at such a ripe old age, but the heroism of someone who's just had enough of the injustices and suffering of the world should serve as inspiration for so many timid sideline observers. A great piece of fiction.
great story in the Batman mythos. I especially appreciated the tie in of the Justice league and a nod to the larger story these superheroes are in
Enjoyed this and it kept me thoroughly entertained on a flight during the holidays. A few things went over my head though and I felt like I maybe should have read more Batman comics before diving straight into this. I am definitely a bigger fan of the villains of Gotham over the heroes. While I enjoyed those lines blurring in this novel, I just don't think I wanted something totally and completely centered around Batman. As I said, I enjoyed this a ton, but I expected something different I think.
A tired, middle-aged Batman comes out of retirement to save Gotham City once more. This is THE essential DC Batman graphic novel. It is the work that started the modern Batman mythos and it reads like a film noir crossed with dark comedy.
I should preface my review by saying that I loved the story and the 3 stars are only because of the artwork. I had a difficult time following along in some parts which made the story less enjoyable. Being a relative graphic novel beginner it was one of the more challenging things I have read.
I did love the idea and the use of the news anchors to tell the story. That made the media buff in me.
"Can you see it Joker? Feels to me like it's written all over my face. I've lain awake nights planning it...picturing it. Endless nights considering every possible method treasuring each imaginary moment. From the beginning I knew that there's nothing wrong with you...that I can't fix with my hands."
