The kind of book I love-a quiet, generational family, immigration story. One feels like you have lived through all the changes, joys and sorrows over the years. This would be a good choice for a book club too. Another of those books that had sat on my library's shelf for years ( literally since 2004) that I always said that I would read.....now I will read the author's others!

It is always difficult to read a book after the movie - however this book did not make me dislike the movie. For the most part I found that the choices in the movie helped to develop the themes of the book, of course the romances were changed a bit for the movie as they often are - loosing some nuances and gaining others. I did love this story about finding oneself and of the complexities of culture and self, family and individual and of relationships.
I loved the details in the writing that allowed a connection to the characters more than the narrative. I found the ending fell a little short as if it either couldn't decide to end or should have gone on a bit further.

This was gorgeously written. It was a special delight to read as a Bengali; many moments in the story felt relatable.
