4,5. I enjoyed reading it a lot, and it proved to be page turner for me. It’s a book doubting the heroism we praise and discussing the consequences of heroic actions. My favourite part was the female narrative, and the retelling of their tormented lives on the sides of the glorious heroes.

It hasn’t left me with a catharsis but it was still a fascinating read and I’d recommend it to anyone searching for a good novel with traces of romance story and Greek myths, all told from a female perspective.

Ariadne is the latest in a wave of myth retellings from a different point of view. It joins the ranks of [b:The Song of Achilles|11250317|The Song of Achilles|Madeline Miller|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1331154660l/11250317._SX50_.jpg|16176791], [b:The Silence of the Girls|37969723|The Silence of the Girls|Pat Barker|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1519448688l/37969723._SY75_.jpg|59693763], [b:Circe|35959740|Circe|Madeline Miller|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1565909496l/35959740._SY75_.jpg|53043399] and others. In this book, we learn more about Ariadne, the daughter of King Minos. We know of her in Greek mythology for her role in helping Theseus, the Athenian hero, escape the labyrinth & the Minotaur. In this book, we hear from her point of view, how she had to flee the country after betraying her father (by helping Theseus) and yearns for a life with Theseus. Theseus abandons her and Ariadne grows into her own. This book brings her to life as more than just a side note in the story of the Minotaur. Ariadne is upset about her role in the machinations of powerful men and she becomes a woman of strength who learns what is important and what love is.

I listened to the audiobook and it was wonderful. It was perfectly cast.

I recommend this one to fans of mythology, retellings, and historical fiction.

Thank you to the publisher for the audiobook.

Great retelling! Loved the focus on Ariadne and Phaedra's stories in parallel - I also enjoyed their asides and musings on other Greek myths (particularly Medusa). The story felt familiar yet new at the same time which is exactly what you need from a retelling!
