Oh, my poor child. He can never catch a break, can he?
Tobias' chapters somehow become my favourite. Maybe because I love meta. The way Tobias meditates on the questions of animal nature and human nature, being both of these very different predators, he could really be a philosopher. Tobias is deep. This also slightly touches on social issues, and humanity's constant inability to accept differences in other people. And the kids are discussing ways of war, and how much you can sacrifice, and GOOD GRIEF, they are children still. How old are they? Fourteen? Fifteen? And they are in the place where they talk of their situation in comparisson with WWII, and Middle East and Northern Ireland. Just wow. This is how I like my sci-fi: referencing the real world issues and tons of meta.
P.S. The Hork-Bajir still hold their place as my favourite aliens.

Tobias is having a tough go of it as a hawk. A new red-tail has moved into his territory and Tobias is unwilling to get into the necessary conflict. In the meantime, the two birds can't get enough to eat, and Rachel accidentally observes Tobias eating roadkill.

Meanwhile, a young Hork-Bajir has wondered out of the protected valley and all fear the worst. The Animorphs come up with a plan to rescue him, but things are complicated when Rachel overhears Chapman questioning his daughter about whatever happened to that boy Tobias. A lawyer is looking for him. A cousin has come home from abroad and wants to make a home for him.

Tobias is one of the most interesting characters in the series and its a shame that his books were alternated with Ax's so there are not as many of them. Tobias' longing for a place to belong is touching and his conversation with Rachel is heartbreaking. We're not even close to the end and readers have to know there's going to be no happy endings. These kids are screwed up forever.

But, baby bunnies!

k a applegate did NOT have to do this to me

This one was great! The action was mostly a backdrop to Tobias being introspective and learning something very important about himself.

When picking a book from my childhood for my reading challenge, I immediately thought of Animorphs. I was obsessed with the series in elementary school, until Harry Potter came out. I wanted to read a Tobias book, because I remember him being one of my favorite characters. It was a bit angsty for my taste, but I mean, he IS a boy-turned-bird going through a bit of an identity crisis, so it's understandable. Doesn't quite hold up as well as HP or Anne of Green Gables, but Animorphs was a big part of my childhood, so it was still a fun throwback.

-Book 22/52 for my personal 2015 reading challenge: "A book from your childhood."
