If you want a fun, adventurous, queer,
mermaid (merman in this case)
fantasy story, this should hit the spot. It did for me! I loved these characters and, for a change, actually wished this was a series so I could have more time with them in this world. The writing style was straightforward and immersive, so it was easy to breeze through. It definitely fits the parameters of a YA book, but I found it very enjoyable as an adult reader. I'm really glad I picked this up, I had bought it because my local bookstore had a signed copy and I liked the colorful cover.

An adventure-filled romance starring a wonderfully diverse cast of characters! This book had a lot crammed into it, so much so that I think some things got left by the wayside — the political machinations felt too obvious and fell by the wayside more often than not, the ending wrapped up far too easily, and Athlen as a character felt underdeveloped. I enjoyed my time in this world, and loved how much Tal grew as a character, but I think I'll ultimately forget about this book. It's a fun one — and one I may've enjoyed more as a young adult — and I'll definitely continue recommending FT Lukens! (Even if just for that absolute showstopper of a cover?!)

Read For:
🔮 Magic
🌊 High Fantasy
🤴🏽Prince x Merfolk
🤝 Rivals to Lovers Vibes
🧜🏼‍♂️ The Gay Little Mermaid

This was absolutely adorable.  It was enchanting and adventurous all the while being wholesome and tense at times.

The characters were detailed and lovable.  I really enjoyed the atmosphere of this book, the plot and setting made this high fantasy all the more enjoyable.

There were The Little Mermaid vibes but gayer and much more interesting with the magic.  It was really cute.

It’s cute. Very cheesy, though.

I do adore the “Little Mermaid”-y-ness of it all, but the twist was extremely easy to see coming, and I knew that Tal was in danger from growing to love Athlen from the first minute he wouldn’t confess what he’d bargained to the sea witch for his legs.

I’m glad these boys had their happy ending. A very sweet, very whimsical, very queer fairy tale, probably best suited for middle grade readers.

I absolutely loved this book! Finished it within a day! Tal and Athen’s journey was so captivating, and I found myself completely immersed in their world. I loved how they were both the last of their kind, and how they found solace in each other despite their differences. It was such a beautiful and unique love story, and I was rooting for them every step of the way! <3
