While entertaining I found that this wasn't one of my favorite books or series from her. If you are looking for a light read then this will be fine.

It was a fairly satisfying conclusion. The end battle felt a little too...easy? There wasn't as much detail or fanfare as I would have expected after three books worth of build-up. Then again, Neryn isn't the most effusive of Marillier's protagonists. She was all fired up to get to Summerfort and then she spent all her time stuck in the healer's room because she didn't dare step a toe out of line because the king and queen were so evil. Okay, I guess but...that makes for sort of a boring story there in the middle.

Maybe it's because this was a full trilogy full of the same characters that I'm feeling a bit let down by the ending. Most of Marillier's books aren't that full of 'adventure' and 'excitement', which is fine because they are great in other aspects, and normally her whole plot is contained within one book.

Well there we go. At least a little something for this book. We had a bit more pacing, some familiarity with characters and a bit more drama. We see characters reach their breaking points and feel a bit of tension as we lead towards the conclusion.

Aaaaaaaaand then it was over. We started to get this buildup and finally some exciting redemptive pieces for our characters and then characters would fall asleep or we'd switch characters. It was a bit like the author didn't know how to tackle or was told the book was too long and chopped some interesting bits out. Even the ending was really lackluster. I guess another way to put it is that this was just so formulaic of a YA series. The uniqueness was the inclusion of the Good Folk, but even that tied up a little too neatly at the end. And the whole "MC goes off in a boat for some restoration" gave me Frodo Baggins vibes.

I hate that this review is so negative. Overall this book was pretty entertaining and I was eager to see what happened next. But as a series this was a dud. I'd classify it as "If you have a long car ride and need a audiobook series thats readily available, try this one" but not one I'd go out of my way to recommend.

IN other words... this series is pretty forgettable. Which is a shame because Juliet Marillier has many other wonderful books and stories. This just wasn't one of them.

This book was more what I wish the whole series would have been like. True, there was a slightly dull beginning where Nerwyn had training. However, once she got involved in the political intrigue, I was in. While I would have appreciated some more action in the book, I still felt interested and invested in the story.

One thing that I truly loved about this book, was being able to read from Flint's perspective. It wasn't disappointing! I still stand by that he was the more interesting character. Although I do wish that there would have been more warning when the shifts of POV happened. A change of chapter or a label with "Flint" or "Nerwyn" would have made the reading less confusing.

Overall, this was a fun read. It was wonderful to finally read a strong third book. It's been a while.

Four Stars.

A very satisfying conclusion. It's hard to wrap up plots when the plots are kingdom-spanning epic odes of fantasy, and sometimes conclusions can fall quite a bit short of their aim (especially, for some unfathomable reason that I could write five blog posts about, in YA). The Caller did not disappoint, and though there weren't really any surprises here, either, the emotions and characters were enough to make the expected conclusion enjoyable.

My only complaint is that this never feels like YA, and the ending especially solidified that feeling for me. I don't want to spoil it, so I won't.

Definitely a series worth checking out if you're a big fan of character-focused fantasy, and don't like the endless world descriptions of heavier "adult" fantasy.

There were several things I didn't like about this book, like the delicacy of the white lady and the lack of explanation on the behavior of the Master of Shadows. And probably the most frustrating thing was how the other Caller's power didn't feel convincing, and he seemed to do a lot right away in the beginning without getting fatigued. Neryn was exhausted after helping Piper fly to his home base, but this untrained caller was herding up a bunch of creatures without any ill effects. I do appreciate the explanation at the end that the other caller was trained, but it could have been presented maybe more convincingly. I loved the twists in the end and it was a very satisfying conclusion.
