This is done in a such a refreshing format, I feared I wouldnt connect with the characters this way but boy was I wrong. Wow!
This book was a ride!! After the initial 50 pages I was totally pulled into the story. It surprised me at many turns and even though I did suspect one of the major twists the execution was so well done I appreciated it regardless. I loved the FORMAT of this book, unlike anything I’ve experienced before. It is creative,, makes scifi accesible and doesn’t infantalise teenagers’ emotions. I was thoroughly impressed by the variety of plot points and attention to detail. Would highly recommend checking this out. Will look out for other Jay Kristoff books.
YA sci-fi novel which mixes literature with visuals/ word art. Reminded me of Firfly's Reavers.
OH MY WOW WHAT THE HELL
I don't think I can speak right now. This was unbelievable, amazing, perfect, it broke my heart a then it put all the little pieces together again. WOW!

Tbh it’s the one star reviews that had me sold on this. I love the unique format. Why? Because it’s super cool. You can’t help but read it and think of all the time and effort that went into them delivering this story to you. It’s fun, romantic, and you can’t help rooting for the protagonists. It’s a heartbreaking but beautiful story. The characters have so much dimension to them. I’ll admit I was skeptical when I flipped through it and saw the sheer amount of effort it would take to read. But in the end it didn’t matter as I read it in a few short hours. Truly amazing piece of not only story telling but art. And I will for sure try to get everyone I know to read this. Okay maybe not everyone but definitely my high school aged brother.
4.5 stars!! This book was amazing and had me in tears but I hate how good the deception was!! I did not expect that ending. Ugh! I need the next book now!

Whoa.....Holy moly.....Where to even start?
This book completely took me by surprise. I cannot believe it begins with high school relationship drama.....like, literal breakup texts....and somehow ends in a full-blown space opera dripping with trauma, existential dread, and unhinged artificial intelligence. What started as skepticism turned into being emotionally wrecked.
I was hesitant because this was labeled YA. But if this is YA, then I’m a monkey’s drunk uncle. Kady and Ezra.....I'm sorry but these two are not 17 year olds. These are the 30 year old versions of ourselves we wish we had been at 17...introspective, witty, loyal, emotionally articulate, and somehow elite-level hackers. Unrealistic? Yep. But absolutely compelling.
And even the side characters, those who only get fleeting snippets feel so real. Jimmy and his quiet devotion to his sister. Dorian pining for Steph. The female captain (name escapes me) who battles between following orders and doing what’s right. They barely get a metnion, but you still care..... like deeply care. Which makes the action scenes that more emotionally stressful.
And then there's AIDAN. The AI antagonist....or antihero...i dont even know. It's terrifying. It’s mid murdering rampage and suddenly is all "but i care, i must do, these tiny little insects of humanity and she is everything".......Like, excuse me?? I wasn’t prepared to have a existential crisis inside a battleship’s AI.
The format is jarring at first with the emails, transcripts and logs, but it still weirdly works. It gets intimate and kind of fragmented and frantic. Give a sec, before giving up on it. Cause it starts working so so well. Especially the audiobook version. Terrifyingly good. The sound design was more horrorifying podcast than cozy YA. I genuinely had to stop and take breaks because I was so stressed and scared. Like, actual stomach knots. So fair warning.....this thing will reach into your chest and squeeze.
