I loved this book! It definitely barrows a lot from sci fi classics, but the telling of this story is so unique that it makes up for it. I was surprised that I was able to care about the characters so much in a book that's told through surveillance footage, IMs, and artificial intelligence files. At different points the story was funny, super dark, and heartbreaking. I can't wait to read the sequel.

The story isn't exactly revolutionary, the characters aren't my favorite in the fictional universe, but this book kept me on my toes and made me want to continue reading every second of the way. It goes without saying that I really enjoyed it.

i just cant do it anymore lmao im so bored reading this book. kady has the potential to be a badass heroine but has literally no personality other than that. ezra’s humor is SO cringy

the format is interesting but also just makes it more confusing to read

i might pick this back up eventually and see if it gets better but wow. i cant believe this is a whole trilogy and that so many people love it so much.

PSA: READ. THIS. BOOK. IMMEDIATELY. As in, expeditiously, forthwith, and with all manner of due haste.

Okay.
Okay.
The only thing in my mind right now is asdflkjhiekfnxksndicnskd so I’ll try to put my thoughts into coherent sentences.

This book is brilliance. Incredible. INCREDIBLE.
It’s got originality, it’s got drama, it’s got profundity, it’s got heroism and poetry and blood and sweat and tears.

Perhaps most notable, the format is seriously ridiculously amazing. Honestly, I’m awestruck. It’s all through a filter. Emails, texts, reports, transcribed audio recordings. Reading it, you aren’t told anything. And yet? It tells a story in as much detail—more?—than so many other conventional books.
The story isn’t being told, it’s happening. Literally unfolding as you read it. You’re just shown a conglomeration of these compiled pages and your expert human brain pieces them all together into this masterpiece.

For events, sure, that’s fine. But the thing is it works for characters too. Which are stunning, by the way. Realistic and nuanced and—referring to one Kady freakin Grant—absurdly badass and ridiculously inspiring. Despite the unconventional writing method of the book, you really know the characters. You don’t really know what they look like or how they move through the world, but you know their voices… and their texting habits.
Bonkers.
I got so attached.
Luckily for me, one of the most depressing fictional deaths is enclosed in these pages. If you read said pages... you’ll know the death I’m talking about.
Have fun with that, chum.

I guarantee it, you will check out this book from the library, start reading it, and think there’s no way a story can be told like this. But just hang in there and keep reading. I promise you it’s worth it.
It’s so worth it.
Enough to make any sane person stay up until their eyes are burning in their skull in order to finish and then close it and stare at the wall for an undisclosed amount of time, attempting to recover a sense of normalcy.
Absolutely sane person behavior amiright?
Just me? Okay cool.

Ah, and I forgot to say, it gets a little creepy. And by a little, I mean a lot.
Like… little girls dragging around human hearts and mad dashes through blood-slicked hallways.
So keep that in mind.
And stop looking at me.
Stop looking at me.
STOPLOOKINGATME

2 stars because I can see the pros to this book. It just personally was not for me. I couldn't follow it and didn't care for the plot, but I do see the creativity of it and admire that.
